Tita's relationship with John is more authentic than her relationship with Pedro.  John and Tita are beneficial to eachother, and they also care for eachother.  John is her true love while Pedro is just something she lusts for. Figuratively, John is more superficial with actual meaning in her life while Pedro is more matierliastic in that she only lusts for him.
