Traditional French dishes while cooking styles have changed to emphasize lighter fare, many still associate French cooking with heavy sauces and complicated preparation. Some classic French dishes include boeuf bourguignon- a stew made of beef braised in red wine, beef broth and seasoned with garlic, onions and mushrooms served with coq au vin, a dish made with chicken, Burgundy wine, lardoons (small strips or cubes of pork fat), button mushrooms, onions and optional garlic. If I went to France I would definitely enjoy the boeuf bourguignon. A French celebration day is Bastille Day–14th July. Commemorating the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789, Bastille Day takes place on the same date each year. The main event is a grand military parade along the Champs-Élysées, attended by the President of the Republic and other political leaders. Another holiday is Victory of the 8th of May 1945. This event marks the anniversary of the end of Second World War in Western Europe when Germany surrendered. A French saint I studied was named Joan of Arch she was given the French national holiday because of Joan became a hero of France, a peasant girl who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance from God, led the French army in a momentous victory at Orleans that repulsed an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred Years’ War. Captured a year afterward, Joan was burned by the English and their French collaborators as a heretic. She became the greatest national heroine of her compatriots. Her achievement was a decisive factor in the later awakening of French national consciousness. Her feast day is May 30.
