A Walk in a Garden

Germany has a lot of events that
focus around beer, but one of the most social events are the beer gardens. The
German beer gardens originated during the early 19th century.
Brewers use to store their beer in cellars and to keep them cool doing the
summers the “brewers covered the ground with loose gravel and planted chestnut
trees.” (Gogermany.about). A little while later the Bavarian King Ludwig gave
the brewers permission to sell beer right at the spot, and thus the beer garden
was born. During the early years beer gardens did not sell food and many
Germans had to bring their own pretzels or wurst to the garden. Traditional
snacks here are the brezels. These are similar to American soft pretzels,
however when making them, they are coated in lye! Lye is caustic is considered
corrosive. Lye is used to decompose dead bodies and break down their tissues. A
recipe for brezels is down below. Beer gardens are very social areas and it can
be hard to find an empty table, it is common to share a table with people you
do not know. So don’t be shy, and meet some new people! The beer sold here is
sold in one liter steins. Strangely if a person would like to have a lighter
beer, or not as much, they can ask the vender for half a liter beer and fill
the other half with lemonade from spigots around the garden. I have never heard
of this before learning about the beer gardens. In Munich there are over 200 beer gardens!
