I chose to research and learn more about Chinese food. I have little to no knowledge about Chinese food. I hope to learn more about what types of foods they eat in China, and why they eat them. Learning the cultural significance behind regional foods is important. For example, China can be broken up into many different regions, and each one has a distinct food style. The food cooked there is based on the agriculture and food they grow in that area. The 8 distinct regional cuisines are: Chuan, Cantonese, Lu, Min, Su, Xiang, Hui and Zhe. There are also distinct foods eaten on special holidays, such as Chinese New Year, special vegetarian foods, and medicinal food. Medicinal food is believed to help with different medical ailments, and that is a part of China's history and culture. The history and geography helped shape some of China's cuisine. For example, in the North, wheat is grown more than rice because of the history of farming and the climate. For this reason, the Northern part of China eats substantially less rice than the Southern region. Rice is essential in many Southern Chinese meals.
