The olive is the most important food item to the Greeks.  It is not only there biggest export, but also used in many dishes.  In Greece the olives are grown on bushes up in the mountains. They have a harvesting season once every year.  The Greeks alternate what side of the mountain they plant on every year because they want the grounds to remain fertile.   Usually these olives are harvested by the farmer coming and picking them off the bushes when they are ripe, but with modern technology there is not as much need for a person to go and do it by themselves.  Olives are not limited in Greece, they can be found almost anywhere.  There is another thing that these Olives are used for, and that is to create Olive Oil.  Greek Olive Oil is one of the most renown in the world.  Here is an article about olive oil and the Greek Economy:http://www.agrovim.gr/index.php?cid=35  My personal favorite Greek dish that uses olives is a Greek Salad.  The salad consists of no actual greens, but rather freshly picked vegetables.  The type of olive used in this salad is Kalamata.  Kalamata olives are
the most popular Greek Olives.  Other ingredients in the Greek Salad are cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, green pepper, and feta chese.

  1. Wow, you learn something new everyday! I never knew Greece was such a large exporter of olives. I enjoyed this post because I absolutely love black olives. Whenever I think of olives I usually think of Italian or Mexican dishes, but know I will also think of Greek dishes.
