“Naan” the Wiser

 Of all Indian cooking nothing is more prevalent than bread, but not just any type of bread; Naan and Roti. Naan and Roti are served at every meal no matter what time of day it is there Naan or Roti at the table for everyone to share. Naan is pizza dough that is rolled out using your hands and then either put onto a flat pan with a little oil and butter or into a Tandoor. A Tandoor is a large cylinder with hot coals at the bottom and an opening at the top from which people put food into it. The Naan is stuck to the wall and cooked until it is golden brown and then taken out and brushed with some butter on top. Roti on the other hand is whole grain flour and made in a similar way but it is never made in a Tandoor. Roti is only ever made on a flat iron skillet with some oil or butter. Naan and Roti are so prevalent because flour in India is extremely cheap, 1kg of flour can cost only 30 rupees which is equivalent to 2.2lbs of flour for 50 cents which can make a lot of bread and feed a big family. Naan and Roti are a staple of Indian food and it is increasing in use today in India. No other country in the world eats as much bread per capita as India does.

  1. I really liked how you connected both naan and roti as ways of how Indians live there everyday life. I found how flour is only 50cents for over 2 pounds to be very interesting. The different ways this bread is cooked is definitely a very nice touch. The only thing I would've added is that you never explained how these types of bread effect the Indian economy. Do Indians even go as far as to exporting the flour because they have a plentiful of it?
