Although a lot of food in Spain can be unhealthy (like churros or flan), most of it can also be very healthy. A Mediterranean diet makes up a lot of the Spanish peoples diet. This tends to be a quite healthy diet. Olive oil is one of the main components in the Mediterranean diet and this is very healthy. Cooking your food in olive oil is much better than lots of butter. Spain has some of the most fertile soil and this helps them to grow a lot of produce which helps make their diets much healthier. They base their diets off of meat, fruits, and vegetables which raises the health factors a lot. Also where other food cultures would eat more pasta, Spain relies more on corn tortillas or rice which is better for you than the flour based flour tortillas or noodles. They also eat a lot of eggs and fresh fish which is very good for protein. They have good access to many good resources to help keep up Mediterranean diets-thanks to all the geographical land forms around them. The Mediterranean diet also includes drinking wine.
Here is also a link to a list of recipes that are Spanish recipes that are healthy. (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_spanish_recipes)
Many consist of meals with baked meat or fish, rice, or vegetables.
American food can tend to be very greasy and fast, but there are trends of people trying different diets. In the novel, it talks a lot about how certain foods can cure from being sad or being sick. I think that for me personally, there are definitely some foods that can make my stomach feel better or me happier. I think generally this depends on the person and what they like, but some foods can make you feel better or be happy.

I love that Spanish food uses a lot of olive oil. My mom also substitutes olive oil for butter in a lot of our dinners. It makes your skin and hair lovely! I feel like Mediterranean and Indian food are very similar. Like the Spanish, Cherokee Indians also base their diet off the land. Corn, or maize, is their main vegetable and the Cherokee also made corn tortillas for their meals. Indians were also major hunters and fishermen. And like the Spanish, the geography majorly impacted all Native American groups. So all meals differed slightly, but overall were healthy. I think out of all cultures Indian and Mediterranean are the most healthy because they rely soley on the basic food groups.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting, knowing Spain and France are geographically close, that they have the same style of food…. kind of, they both can consist of sea food having to deal with fish, crab and more protein filled foods. Spanish food and French food are both very similar they both have lots of breads and tortillas. A large food accommodation that the French and Spanish would agree on is their wine. I cant wait to tast the delicious food you are planning on bringing in.
